Oilers Bullpen Led By Angiuli Secures Series Opening Win Vs. Corona Del Mar
Freddie Angiuli works around inherited runners with a pair of strikeouts in the fourth, while Trevor Goldenetz plates a pair of runs in 10th win of the 2025 season
The Huntington Beach Oilers (10-1) remain undefeated in Sunset League play thanks to a 4-2 series opening win on the road against the Corona Del Mar SeaKings (7-7), Tuesday afternoon from Corona Del Mar High School. A pitching duel led the way early on in this contest as starting pitcher Otto Espinoza tossed three clean innings with five strikeouts before getting knocked out of the game in the fourth after a line drive off the bat of Charlie Kaster nailed his right ankle. Out of the bullpen, senior right-hander Freddie Angiuli navigated around multiple runners on base, yielding two unearned runs while picking up a pair of strikeouts. Courtesy of this inning out of the pen, Angiuli picked up his first win of the season.
Prior to the bottom of the fourth, the Oilers dropped a three spot in the third, capitalizing on a throwing error by SeaKings starter Marcello Anelli that scored CJ Weinstein, a sacrifice bunt by Trevor Goldenetz to score Jared Grindlinger, and finally Ethan Porter depositing a single into right field to score Jason Dunham. By scoring a trio of runs in the third frame, the Oilers as a team have produced 15 total runs, their largest scoring inning of any combined.
Fellow relievers Duncan McLeod and Ethan Porter chipped in with clutch efforts off the bench, combining for three innings, no runs and four strikeouts. By completing a clean seventh inning, Porter locked in his team-leading third save of the season along with keeping his ERA at 0.00.
With today's win, the Oilers are now 6-0 to begin Sunset League play, and now a perfect 9-0 since the start of head-to-head play versus the SeaKings, which began back in 2018. Also, the Oilers are now 7-0 on the designated road team, averaging over six runs per/game and an ERA of less than 1.50.
