BLAST OFF; Oilers Use Long Ball To Ensure Sweep Of Griffins
CJ Weinstein and Trevor Goldenetz leave the yard for the first time this season while Jayton Greer plates four in stellar Friday afternoon victory
The Huntington Beach Oilers (18-2) pick up yet another Sunset League sweep, this time of rival Los Alamitos Griffins (15-7-2) by the final of 7-2, Friday afternoon from Huntington Beach High School. This win extends the Oilers winning streak to four games, while staying perfect against league opponents at 11-0.
The theme of "chicks dig the long ball" ran wild through the Oilers batting order this afternoon as three different players (Jayton Greer, CJ Weinstein & Trevor Goldenetz) deposited the ball over the fence for a round tripper. Recording three home runs in a single game is the first time it occurred this season, overtaking two in one game on April 4 vs. Corona Del Mar.
Besides home runs, the Oilers manufactured runs by scoring in four of six innings, starting off with a two-run double by Greer in the home half of the first. With the game knotted at two in the bottom of the fourth, Huntington Beach scratched for a run as Jared Grindlinger slid under the tag of Griffins' reliever Ethan Maddies on a wild pitch miscue. The Oilers offense wouldn't look back as they kept the lead for good, adding insurance on the three aforementioned home runs in the sixth and seventh inning.
The senior trio of Tyler Bellerose, Jake Frohn and Freddie Angiuli kept the Los Alamitos offense at bay for the majority of the game by combining to allow just two runs in seven innings with seven strikeouts. Bellerose, the future Oregon State Beaver, eclipsed a milestone of 100 strikeouts in his Oilers career in the third inning courtesy of Griffins shortstop Tyler Smith fishing at a breaking ball. Frohn secured his third win of the season with three solid shutout innings.
With today's sweeping win, the Oilers have completed their third sweep of the year and secure their first home Friday win of 2025. Also, they keep their record spotless when scoring four or more runs in a contest with a 14-0 mark (5-0 at home).
