Wild Walk-Off Magic Strikes Again For Oilers In Series Opener vs. Sailors
The Oilers score four unanswered runs with two outs, capped off by a three-run home run by Jared Grindlinger
The Huntington Beach Oilers (19-2) provide late game heroics in a 4-2 win against the Newport Harbor Sailors (17-6), Tuesday afternoon from Huntington Beach High School. This win extends the Oilers winning streak to five games, while securing their second consecutive Tuesday walk-off victory.
The quote, "all good things come to those who wait", rang very true in game number 21 of the season as Huntington Beach battled all afternoon against Sailors righty Gavin Guy who yielded just three hits (no runs) through six and two-thirds innings. However, the fight never left the heart's of the Oilers as Ethan Porter began the seventh inning rally by depositing a bloop single to right field which allowed Jayton Greer to follow up with a ground ball single to right field. With two-on and the winning run at the plate, second baseman Cole Clark got the Oilers on the board for the first time with an opposite field single into the left-centerfield gap. As pressure mounted and Guy talked himself into staying in the game, Jared Grindlinger, who entered today's game on a four-game hitting streak, found a way to send the Oilers faithful home in pure jubilation as he annihilated a 3-0 fastball just to the right of the batter's eye in dead centerfield to lock down the third walkoff win of 2025.
In order to even have an opportunity in the seventh, the Oilers pitching rode the ship as starter Otto Espinoza worked around a third inning run by keeping the Sailor's batters quiet, completing five innings with only one run (unearned), two hits and six strikeouts. Out of the bullpen, Tanner Brown did not get the start to the afternoon he'd like as he succumbed to a solo blast from Guy, but the southpaw did not waiver. Brown would complete one and two-thirds innings with a trio of strikeouts and only one walk. Senior Jake Frohn would lock down the final out in the top of the seventh and place himself as the pitcher of record and eventual winner.
With today's cardiac style victory, the Oilers not only stay perfect in Sunset League play (12-0), but also while wearing their alternative home black uniforms (6-0). To further the stat book, they are now 15-0 when scoring four or more runs in a game (6-0 at home).
