Double Trouble; Oilers Power Past Chargers To Snap Two-Game Losing Streak
Jayton Greer leads the Huntington Beach offense in season best day at the plate in runs, doubles and extra-base hits
The Huntington Beach Oilers (20-4) get back to their winning ways in game one of this week's three-game series by demolishing the Edison Chargers (13-12) 18-1, Tuesday afternoon from Edison High School. This win snaps the Oilers two-game losing streak while also marking the largest margin of victory in a game thus far this season.
Tabbed with the start, Otto Espinoza pitched through adversity in the first after struggling with command and yielding one run. He bounced back by sitting down the final 10 batters faced in his four no-hit innings of work, capped off by striking out the side in the fourth.
This performance gave the offense all the confidence in the world as they scored in four consecutive innings (third through sixth) and totaled season highs in runs scored (18), doubles (9), extra-base hits (9). The bashing from the batter's box also led to matching a season-high with runs scored in a single inning (7 in the 5th), which was previously achieved on April 10 vs. Collierville (NHSI) when Huntington Beach scored seven in the second.
Four players in the batting order recorded multi-RBI performances like Jayton Greer (3), Cole Clark (2), Jared Grindlinger (2), Trent Grindlinger (2) and CJ Weinstein (2). Greer (3), Goldenetz (2) and J. Grindlinger (2) collected multi-hit performances, adding to their stellar outing and boosting their batting averages to top-three on the team. Off the bench, Micah Riola notched his first RBI of the season (bases loaded walk) and Dylan Matejka solidified his first hit of his senior season with an infield knock in the seventh.
Today's win guarantees at least one win against every Sunset League team this season and extends the winning streak versus the Chargers to 12. This also pushes the overall record since 2005 to 32-14 (.696) in the Huntington Beach city rivalry. The Oilers stay undefeated in their black uniforms (7-0) and when scoring four or more runs in a game (16-0).
