Oilers Claim 8th Consecutive Sunset League Title With Sweep Of Chargers
Trevor Goldenetz sets the tone on offense as the Oilers once again claim double digit scoring on the road
The Huntington Beach Oilers (22-4) continue their sweeping ways within the Sunset League as they complete their fourth sweep of the year, this time against the Edison Chargers (13-14), Friday afternoon from Edison High School. This win cements the Oilers as 2025 Sunset League champions and on pace to host a first round matchup in the CIF Division 1 Bracket.
Huntington Beach wasted no time getting on the board as they sent 12 batters (in 26 minutes) to the plate in the first, scoring six on just two hits, taking advantage of starting pitcher Braedon Hobson who struggled with command. Patience at the plate led to four walks, a hit by pitch, two wild pitches and two RBI Singles by Cole Clark and Jason Dunham. Combining with the strong offensive performance on Tuesday, the Oilers scored 24 runs in the last six innings at Chargers Field.
This quick start gave starting pitcher Tyler Bellerose plenty of room to work with ease. He tossed three shutout innings, yielding only one hit (a two-out single to Mason Gerhardt in the third) and collecting three strikeouts. His full arsenal was on display as the devastating changeup kept Edison batters confused as it painted the corners all afternoon.
As winning was the number one priority, the offense blazed a scoring trail in the fourth with yet another six-run frame, capped off by a three-run Triple by Trevor Goldenetz. This triple totaled four RBI on the day for the future Cal State Long Beach Dirtbag, his highest total of the season. Overall, the Oilers sent 11 batters to the plate in an inning that lasted 24 minutes featuring three hits, two walks, two hit batters, an error and four stolen bases.
The bullpen was as solid as ever, as Tanner Brown (who garnered the win in relief as the pitcher of record in the fourth inning), Jared Marchbank, Dane Cunningham and Ashton Arroyo tossed more zeros through 3.2 innings with a combined strikeout total of seven.
Today's win essentially locks the Oilers into the CIF Division 1 Playoffs that begin on Friday, May 16 and solidifies more dominance in a highly competitive Sunset League. They also finish this year's three-game series against Edison winning all three games by a combined score of 35-4 and now own a 14-game winning streak, dating back to April 3, 2021.
