Oilers Dethrone Barons In Series Sweep
Every Oilers starter recorded at least one hit, walk, RBI or run scored in another Sunset League offensive breakout performance
The Huntington Beach Oilers (16-4-1) complete their fourth Sunset League sweep of the 2026 regular season by defeating the Fountain Valley Barons (11-10) 11-1, Friday afternoon from Fountain Valley High School. This win extends the Oilers head-to-head record against the Barons to 35-20 (.636) in the last 55 matchups, while also staying undefeated in 12 games within league play.
Patience and plate discipline was the name of the game in the first inning as the Oilers sent eight batters to the plate, scoring three runs without a single hit recorded. Bases loaded walks to Owen Bone and Sol Moriyama kicked things off, followed by a Brayden Wood sacrifice fly. The offense was able to knock out Fountain Valley starter Andrew Harviston after just one-third of an inning, charging him with all three runs.
As the offense picked up right where it left off on the road (Tuesday's 16-run display), Huntington Beach dropped a season-high six spot in the second inning alone. Batting around the order with 11 plate appearances, key run-producing hits came off the bat of Ely Mason and Jason Dunham, while Bone added to the mix once again with an RBI single to right - extending his season-high hitting streak to seven games. During this stretch, the senior utilityman is batting .450 (8-for-20) with 1 HR, 8 RBI and 9 R. This also ties Grindlinger (7 - March 10-25) for the longest hitting streak on the team.
With a 9-0 advantage after two innings, starting pitcher Tanner Brown cruised through the Barons lineup. Retiring seven straight to open the game and 15 of 19 total, the southpaw collected three strikeouts while yielding just one run. With these numbers, Brown furthers the strong pitching efforts from the entire starting rotation over the past two weeks. Six earned runs in 33.2 innings pitched, equaling a 1.24 ERA, has led to a 5-2 record overall in that time with starters factoring into the equation at 4-1.
After picking up two more insurance runs in the fifth on back-to-back groundouts to strengthen an 11-1 lead, the Oilers turned to junior Ryder Cielen to close the game. Cielen, who was on the Varsity roster last season but did not pitch due to injury, made his long awaited debut and found success. Tossing a scoreless seventh and finishing off the sweep emphatically with a swing-and-miss strikeout.
By locking down yet another series sweep, Huntington Beach currently holds the top spot in the Sunset League by two games over the Newport Harbor Sailors and adds to their lead in the overall standings as well. 103 of the 135 total runs scored this year have come against league opponents which is an average of 8.58 runs/game.
