Oilers Shutout By Sailors; Magic Number Stays At Two
Cayden Hammond spins another quality outing, but the bats go cold with runners in scoring position
The Huntington Beach Oilers (18-6-1) drop their second consecutive game in Sunset League play to kick off this week's three-game series versus the Newport Harbor Sailors (19-7) by the final of 1-0, Tuesday afternoon from Newport Harbor High School. This is the second time the Oilers have been shut out offensively this year, first since April 7 vs. Los Osos. The race towards the Sunset League title still favors the Oilers as they need to win just one of the final two games this week to clinch their 9th consecutive league title.
A pitching duel broke out between Cayden Hammond and Gavin Guy and they each exchanged zeros for the first two innings. However, it was the Sailors who struck for the lone run in the third as runners resided on the corners with one out and Keoni Wun dropped a bunt right back to the pitcher. What appeared to be a routine throw to home turned into a mini collision between Hammond and first baseman Dane Cunningham, which delayed the throw, allowing Cameron Hatfield to score.
Outside of that blemish, the Oilers senior righty once again was dominant on the bump even though he gets tabbed with the loss. Hammond tossed six innings, with only one run and three hits allowed and five total strikeouts. In all five starts this year, Hammond has gone four or more innings with a limited 1.40 ERA.
Nothing felt in rhythm for the Oilers offense today as they struck out eight times and failed to score in four different innings when runners were on base. In the third an inning-ending double play erased a runner on first and one out. In the fifth, a leadoff double by Owen Bone was stranded at second and Guy retired the following three batters. In the sixth, Huntington Beach had runners on the corners with two outs before Cunningham would get rung up to end the threat. Finally, the Oilers started the seventh on a positive note with an infield base hit by Bone, which was moved over to second thanks to a sacrifice bunt by pinch-hitter Tommy August. Unfortunately, Tanner Brown and pinch-hitter Brayed Wood would be the final two victims in Guy's complete game shutout performance.
With this loss, the Oilers fall to 14-2 in Sunset League play with their magic number to clinch staying at 2. The Sailors continue to be the kryptonite of the Oilers as they have taken three straight, dating back to April 23, 2025. In terms of trends, today marked the fourth straight affair where the Oilers allowed the opposition to score first which has led to a 5-4-1 record.
Stars of the Game:
Cayden Hammond: 6 IP, 1 ER, 5 K
Owen Bone: 2-3, 2B
Jared Grindlinger: 2-2, BB
